Telling My Own Story
I tend to lose energy from talking with strangers. So I wasn’t very good at small talk either…
Observing people who are good at small talk here and there, I noticed a difference between them and me. They start with their own story instead of a question.
For example, if you simply ask a cliché question like “Did you have a good weekend?”, the answer tends to come back as something like “Yeah, not much.” On the other hand, if you throw in a question along with specific context, like “This weekend the weather was so nice that I rode my bike along the Han River, and it was really refreshing. Did you have a good weekend?”, it becomes much easier to keep the conversation going.
Since there are always many new people to greet, I should practice briefly adding a bit more of my own story each time.
